It’s a beautiful Monday in Santa Barbara!  The fog has cleared and the sun is shining.

We had fantastic program last Friday with Jerry Roberts unraveling all of the California propositions on the November ballot. Was great to learn some of the inside stories about many of the propositions and who is really behind them.  And also just amazed me how much money is being spent to attract votes.

We do not have a meeting this week, but on Friday, October 18, Steve Epstein will be talking to our club about the literacy crisis facing students in Santa Barbara and throughout the State.  Steve is a local realtor in Santa Barbara who I have met through California Concern, a local organization focusing on issues facing California and locally.  The organization is non-partisan and has been actively involved in looking at literacy in our community for nearly 20 years. He will be talking about the fact that nearly half of the students in Santa Barbara are not reading at grade level, and their math scores are even worse.  And talk about what we as a community can do to improve the situation.

This Thursday, I leave for a two-day pilot proficiency program in beautiful Fresno.  One day of ground school, and another day flying with the experts to improve my piloting skills.  Wish me luck as I punch holes in the sky above the Central Valley.
